Fat Burner Racing Engineering finished the 2009 GP2 season on a high after its driver Dani Clos, finished third in today’s sprint race at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve. Lucas id Grassi, on the other hand, had the misfortune of being handed a drive through at the beginning of the race which ended his chances to score another great result.

After completing two warm up laps, drivers and cars took their places on the grid to start the last race of the 2009 season. But when the lights went off at the Portuguese track, a heavy accident between Herck and Petrov, whose car had stalled on the grid, red flagged the race for over 20 minutes. Once the track was cleared of all the debris, the safety car lead the field with Lucas, who had started six, running in third. Dani, who had lost one place to Valsecchi, was in 10th. At the end of the second lap, the safety car left the track slowly and created certain confusion among the drivers. Lucas, who for some unknown reason had the car’s front lift briefly, lost a place to Kobayashi, but a couple of laps later he regained the lost position. Dani, meanwhile was overtaken by Villa and Pérez. Villa, knowing he had passed the Fat Burner Racing Engineering under yellow flags, quickly gave the place back, contrary to the Mexican, who was later penalized with 25 second and handed third to Dani.

Things turned for the worse for Lucas when he was handed a drive through, along with five other drivers, as a consequence of the confusion with the exit of the safety car at the restart. This unfortunate turn of events pushed the Brazilian driver back to 17th place. This favored his teammate who was now running in fourth and starting a good fight with Villa for third, while holding back the attacks of Parente. Though the Spanish driver was not able to pass his countryman, he managed to keep the Portuguese at bay and cross the line in fourth position (although later had third when Perez, who finished second, was penalized), scoring his first points in GP2. Lucas, on the other hand, could do nothing to finish in the points and had to settle for 15th.

Dani Clos: At the start I lost one place and I was behind Valsecchi. I believe I could have passed him, but then there was an accident and when the race restarted behind the safety car, two drivers overtook me. These two drivers were Pérez and Villa. Villa knew he had done some wrong, so he gave me back my place, but Pérez did not. I think this has been a complicated race as there was a lot of tyre wear. I had Parente pressuring me during most of the race, but I was able to hold my place. Though today I have scored my first points in the GP2 championship, I am not really happy as I should have finished third, but I guess this is the way things go in racing. Although, Pérez, now with a 25 second penalty, has handed me a podium finish.

I believe that this season I was not able to show what I am capable of. During the first races I had always some kind of problem and then I had to start the sprint races from the back. Maybe the races were good, as I was overtaking often, but the truth is that it was not good enough since I was not scoring points. Now I hope to be stronger for next year and that everything goes well.

Lucas Di Grassi: I had a good start to the race, improving three positions. Everything was going fine until the safety car left the track. In my opinion, what happened was a safety car mistake that cost the entire top of the field their respective positions, as we were all penalized with drive throughs. At the restart, my car actually lifted a bit, and this allowed Kobayashi to overtake me, but I quickly gained back third place. We lost an easy podium here. It is incredible that we lost third position in the teams championship, now, sadly, we are forth.

Alfonso de Orleáns-Borbón, Team President: Fantastic job everybody! Pitty about the drive through handed to Lucas, but wonderful firsts points for Dani. I would also like to take the time to congratulate everyone in the team for their fantastic work they have done this season. Now we have to improve on this results next year.

RACE 2 – QUALIFYING

Following yesterdays disappointment, today’s qualifying produced a great recovery from Sten Pentus and the Fortech Motorsport team.

The track was wet again for qualifying, and this time the strategy worked to perfection with Sten preserving his tyres and saving his best effort for the last two minutes when he grabbed an excellent second fastest time in session to put him alongside Race 1 and Race 2 pole man Daniel Ricciardo.

It was a great reward for the whole team and will give Sten a clear run to the first corner at the start.

RACE 2

From his starting position to the left of Ricciardo, Sten made a perfect start to nose ahead of the Australian into the first corner and momentarily take the lead into the first corner, only to have the P1 Motorsport car of Jan Charouz sneak in front as they exit the corner.

Sten was quickly into his rhythm and pressured Charouz until the Czech driver pitted on lap five, leaving Sten in command at the front. Riccairdo was in pursuit and Sten responded with some very quick laps making his compulsory stop for two rear tyres on lap twelve.

Sten emerged from the pits just in front of Charouz and had to work really hard to bring his tyres up to temperature and immediately began to pull away and consolidate his lead.

Sten extended his lead all the way through the race to the last lap, taking the fastest lap of the race in the process.

Sten drove a perfect race and crossed the line 8.7 seconds ahead of second placed Charouz, with Red Bull junior Ricciardo a further a 3.3 seconds behind Charouz in third place.

The result was great reward for the entire Fortec Motorsport team and Sten for the hard, focused work they have put in during the collective tests prior to the start of the season.

Sten said, “I am so happy with this result as it gives a great thank you to all those who have supported and believed in me. Now that I have a taste of what it is like to win at this level, I would like to experience this again.”

For Richard Dutton and the Fortec team it marks a return to the front with the revived Fortec Motorsport World Series team.

“I’m really pleased for Sten, because he grew with us last year and this dominant win totally justified our belief in him and is thoroughly deserved, because his dedication to improve and all his hard work with Stuart King have made this possible”, said Dutton. “It is also great to see our new WSR team come together under Team Manager Jamie Dye.”

The second event of the 2010 World Series calendar takes place at Spa on the weekend of 30th April to 1st of May.

WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT

ROUND 6

HUNGARORING

FRIDAY

Free Practice:

Following the last two rounds of the championship which proved both disappointing and difficult for Fortec Motorsport and Sten, the two free practice sessions went well with team’s focus of the day being preparation for the two different downforce levels required by the regulations for the two races. As a result, Friday’s lap times did not truly represent the team’s competitiveness, but the information gathered was invaluable, particularly as the extremely high temperatures predicted for the two race days would be a very big factor in tyre wear and degradation.

SATURDAY

RACE 1

Qualifying:

All cars were set up to run the obligatory low downforce for the Saturday race and with high track temperatures, tyre management for the session was critical with Sten posting his best laps at the end of the session to grab an excellent 4th place for Saturday “low downforce” race.

Red Bull Junior Daniel Ricciardo took a dominant pole position over half a second ahead of Championship leader Mikail Aleshin and Red Bull Junior Brendan Hartley who edged Sten by only two tenths and half a tenth respectively.

Sten’s engineer Stuart King was pleased overall with the result but felt there was more to come, “Sten did a very good job to put his best lap together but I think with the work we did yesterday, we can look forward to a strong race.”

Race 1:

Despite starting on the dirtier side of the grid, Sten made an excellent start for the run to the first corner and positioned himself perfectly to pass Hartley around the outside into turn 1, immediately latching onto second placed Aleshin’s tail. While Ricciardo soon began to open out a lead on Aleshin, Sten was forcing the Russian to work very hard to hold onto second. Just as Sten’s rhythm was building and the pressure on Aleshin increasing, the Safety Car was deployed to retrieve a car from a dangerous position.

At the re-start Sten resumed his attack for second but in the process quickly lost rear tyre performance and began to fall away to then come under pressure for the remainder of the race from a charging Brendon Hartley. Sten and Brendon turned in a great display of close quarter driving providing a scintillating last lap as they raced side by side to the checkered flag, with Sten taking the final podium position by1.4 seconds from the young Red Bull F1 test and reserve driver.

Sten was delighted to be back on the podium and thoroughly enjoyed the race, “I got a good start and was able to get the advantage on Brendon into turn 1. The car felt pretty good initially but after the Safety Car I really struggled with a lot of over steer and I started to fall back just as Brendon was starting to go quicker. We then had a great battle and I just managed to hang on for third. We learned a lot today from troubles we had after the Safety car and I think we can put this to good use for Race 2 on Sunday”.

SUNDAY

RACE 2

Qualifying:

With the downforce level for this race left to the teams discretion, the team increased downforce for qualifying which produced a different mix of pacesetters at the front with Ricciardo and Hartley struggling to get the Tech1 cars competitive compared to the Saturday speed, while Aleshin was again looking strong and 2009 EuroCup Champion Albert Costa impressing. For most of the session Sten did not feature in the top ten, but he turned in a stunning performance on his last lap to take a sensational pole position, the only driver to break into the 1minute 32 second bracket with a time of 1.32.957. Behind Sten, Costa (1.33.069) and Ferrari Academy driver Daniel Zampieri (1.33.118) filled second and third on the grid, with Saturday winner Ricciardo placed seventh and Hartley tenth.

The Hungaroring is a very technically demanding drivers circuit, so for Sten it had extra value, ”I like this track because you have to get everything absolutely right and there’s absolutely no time to rest, so to take my first World Series pole here is specially enjoyable, and it gives me a lot of confidence for the race”.

Race 2

From his pole position Sten made a perfect start to lead unchallenged into turn 1 and by the end of the lap had already opened a comfortable gap to second placed Costa with Aleshin and Greg Mansell right behind. Sten continued to open out an unchallenged lead which allowed him to make his mandatory tyre stop and resume in the lead which he then stretched to over 6.5 seconds when the race was “red-flagged” with a lap remaining because Hartley’s Tech1 car was blocking the track at turn 3.

It was an almost perfect performance with pole position and a dominant win with only fastest lap missing from Sten’s Sunday successes, “Everything went perfectly today and I’m really happy to get my second win of the season. After qualifying I felt confident we could have a really good race, but everything turned out better than I could have imagined. It’s great to have such a good weekend to go into the summer break, and I’m really looking forward to the last three rounds of the championship. The Team worked brilliantly all weekend, my engineer gave me a great car, and the result is a great reward for all the effort everybody has made”.

The win was also very satisfying for Fortec’s boss Richard Dutton who put this team together from scratch at the end of last year. Dutton’s delight was clear, “To take our second win this year in such dominant fashion is tremendously rewarding for the whole team. I am also really pleased for Sten and his group who kept their faith in us to put a new, competitive team together for this year. Sten did a superb job in both qualifying and the race. He thoroughly deserves his success as his commitment, hard work and maturity have set a great example for us all. He really drove a perfect race, all the more impressive in view of his very limited race experience when he stepped into Word Series eighteen months ago.”

Sten now lies third in the Championship standings with 69 points behind Aleshin who leads with 97 points and Ricciardo on 86 points.

World Series Renault resumes at Hockenheim on the 4th-5th September, after the summer break.

Final test day of the 2009 season for the Fat Burner Racing Engineering Team at the Paul Ricard Circuit with drivers Sam Bird and Jérôme d’Ambrosio. The Englishman enjoyed a very positive test day with the Spanish Team to finish third on the time-sheets while the Belgian was eighth in the afternoon.

After suffering from engine problems during the two first test days, Fat Burner Racing Engineering had a very productive and trouble free final test day at the French track. Sam Bird and Jérôme d’Ambrosio took over duties to work on the team’s test program towards the 2010 season while showing their skills at the wheel of the two red Dallara GP2 cars.

Sam Bird’s program focused on finding the best set up possible. In the morning session, the car was not performing as he would have liked, but he managed to set very competitive times as team and driver got familiar with each other. In the afternoon, all his previous efforts payed off and he finished the test in third overall. Jérôme d’Ambrosio, on the other hand, did not manage to be at the top of the time sheets as he could not get the most of the new tyres. Nevertheless, the Belgian driver had a very fruitful day with the Spanish outfit and was very satisfied with this second outing with Fat Burner Racing Engineering.

Sam Bird: It’s been an enjoyable day. I liked working with all the guys at Racing Engineering. We worked hard on the set up throughout the day and in the afternoon we landed up third after a difficult morning. Overall, I am pleased with the result.

Jérôme d’Ambrosio: Overall, the day was really good. We had a very good morning and set the time with used tyres. In the afternoon, we tested some different things, but didn’t get what we expected on new tyres. I am happy with the day in general. Just like in Jerez it was nice to work with the guys and I think we can be satisfied with this test day.

Alfonso de Orleáns-Borbón, Team Principal: Very good. Sam has been very impressive. We worked in the right direction, although in the morning the car was not really what he wanted. He has been delivering stable results throughout these three days of testing and finished them off in a strong third position today. Jerome had a very productive test day with us today and although he was not on the top of the timing sheets in the afternoon, we know very well what would have been possible. Track temperature was very decisive during these last three days and not always playing to our favor. Nevertheless, we had six very good drivers in our cars and I am pleased with the performance of every single one of them.

Eventful second day of testing for Fat Burner Racing Engineering at the Paul Ricard Circuit where Spanish driver Roldán Rodríguez saw his day hampered by a problem with his car’s engine. Frenchman Charles Pic had a day of steady progress.

After yesterday’s problems with the car driven by Christian Vietoris, the team worked until late night to change the engine and make sure that everything would be up and running for today’s session with Roldán Rodríguez and Charles Pic.

The Spanish driver, at the wheel of the number 8 car, soon showed a very promising pace, but the gremlins returned. After setting the 8th best time of the morning, he had to sit out a good part of the afternoon session as the team was forced to change, once again, the V8 unit. Once the new engine was replaced, Rodríguez returned to the track, but several red flags and generally very little time left in the afternoon session, prevented him from making it to the very top of the timesheet. He had to settle for 6th, one tenth off P1.

For Frenchman Charles Pic, the session was a chance to continue adapting to GP2 while trying to impress the Fat Burner Racing Engineering crew. The rookie did a good job despite seeing his best time of the afternoon taken off as a result of running with a car declared underweight by 2 kilos. Charles ran on used tyres which had 47 laps and although the weight would not have had any effect on his performance, the Racing Engineering crew is very sorry that it’s driver had his afternoon times erased. Charles would have been 13th on the final time sheet. His last laps were not regarded at that point, so he concluded the session without a time.

Fat Burner Racing Engineering will continue working on its 2010 program tomorrow. The last test day of the season will see Belgian Jérôme d’Ambrosio and Englishman Sam Bird at the wheel of the Racing Engineering cars.

Roldán Rodríguez: I think this was a positive day. It’s a shame we were so limited on running time due to the engine problems, especially in the afternoon. But I am less than a tenth off first. This is such a small difference which can be easily explained by having had little track time. We tried decent changes on the car, but the day was mainly characterized by us struggling to find the time we lost due to the engine change.

Charles Pic: It was very good today. In the afternoon we worked on the car’s set up and found a good direction to follow. Before I came back for new tyres, on my last run, it felt like we made a good step. We then decided to come back to one of our morning set-ups. This was a pity, as we think the other would have worked better with new tyres.

Alfonso de Orleáns-Borbón, Team Principal: Before anything I would like to say a big thank you to our boys. They worked late into the night changing an engine and had to change it yet again this midday. This cost Roldán precious track time today, which would have allowed him to fine tune the car to his needs. However, he was very close to P1. We also know that the red flags towards the end of test sessions did not help. With some more laps, he would surely have been at the top. As for Charles, his time was disallowed, something we obviously accept without any discussion, as rules are the rules. Two kilos are not making any difference on the old tyres he was running on, and we have to say sorry to Charles for losing his official time. The team knows he made steady progress throughout the day and we hope he enjoyed this test day with us.

First test day of the week for Fat Burner Racing Engineering at the Paul Ricard Circuit where Swiss driver Fabio Leimer and German Christian Vietoris were at the wheel of the Spanish team’s cars. Both drivers set very good times and ran at a competitive pace throughout the day, though Vietoris suffered a little glitch on his car’s engine during the afternoon session.

After three days of testing at the Jerez track over a month ago, today it was back to action for Fat Burner Racing Engineering. Working on its preparations for the 2010 season, as well as evaluating drivers, the Spanish team enjoyed a positive day despite some problems on Christian Vietoris’ engine, which hampered his progresses during the afternoon. Both Leimer and Vietoris used the morning to adapt to the team and the French track where the German never ran before. He soon showed a very promising rhythm to end the morning session in third position. Fabio Leimer, on the other hand, set the sixth fastest time. After the midday break, the Fat Burner Racing Engineering team continued with its test program. Only several red flags interrupted Leimer’s attempts to improve his best time of the day while Vietoris had to face a problem with his engine which jeopardized the good work he was doing. Fabio Leimer finished the afternoon session in an excellent second position, whereas Christian Vietoris had to settle for sixteenth.

The team will now analyze the data to find the problem on Vietoris engine. Though it is possible that the car he drove will need a new unit for tomorrow’s session, when Spaniard Roldán Rodríguez and Frenchman Charles Pic will take over duties.

Fabio Leimer: It was a very good day. In the afternoon we worked a bit on the car to make it even better, while in the morning I still had to get used to the track. I was not expecting to be in second position today as I didn’t feel such a big difference between new and used tyres, but I think this had to do with the track conditions. It’s a pity there were several red flags at the end of the afternoon session as I think we could have improved even more. I am happy with the work of the engineers and mechanics, everything went fine and I am satisfied with today’s test day.

Christian Vietoris: The day started really well. We finished the morning session in third position and I think we could have done even better. But as I have never driven at Paul Ricard before, I needed to first learn the track. In the afternoon the main objective was to improve my line. When we mounted the new tyres, we were not able to run anymore, but it was nevertheless a good test day.

Alfonso de Orleáns-Borbón, Team Principal: I am not happy with the troubles on Christian’s car. Let’s wait to see what it is. But when evaluating drivers, it makes it quite difficult to judge them if they cannot run. I am sure, based on his performance during the rest of the day, we would have seen him among the best of the day. As for Fabio, very good job; just what we expected from him. At the end of the day, I have to say that they are both very talented drivers, which doesn’t make the decision an easy one.

Eventful third and last day of GP2 tests at the Circuito de Jerez, where Fat Burner Racing Engineering drivers Dani Clos and Jérôme d’Ambrosio were always in the top places of both the morning and afternoon sessions.

The day at the Spanish track began under grey skies and rain which forced the teams to use wet tyres during the first stints. The tricky conditions of the track caused several red flags that hampered both Fat Burner Racing Engineering drivers from progressing. However, both managed to set the fastest times of the morning session with the Spaniard leading his team-mate by 0.061 seconds.

In the afternoon, with the threat of rain once again on the horizon, both Dani and Jérôme tried to make the best of a dry track. The Spaniard was well on his way to top the time-sheets, but his efforts to improve were hampered, once again, by red flags and at the end he had to settle for second. The Belgian, on the other hand, was showing a very good pace, but a problem with his car’s gearbox sent him back to the garage 30 minutes from the end of the session. The fast work of the Spanish team made possible for Jérôme to go back onto the track during the last moments of the session, where he set the fourth best time.

Dani Clos: It has been a very positive day, despite starting with rain. At the end of the morning session, when the track was already drying up, we mounted the slick tyres and were quite fast. But I found some traffic and that cost me around half a second. During the afternoon session we were at the top of the time sheets. The car was going very well but, as we thought the conditions would worsen towards the end of the session, we mounted the new tyres too soon. At the end we went out again with the old tyres and I was about to set my best time when I found some more traffic because the new guys do not really check their mirrors… On top of that, whenever I went out with new tyres, the session was red flagged just after completing my warm up laps and when I was going for the flying lap. However, it has been a good day. We have done a good job and I believe it has been a good test towards next season.

Jérôme d’Ambrosio: Everything was going really well today until we had an issue with the gearbox. I was on a really fast lap when on the start/finish straight I lost a lot of time due to that glitch. It’s a real shame as I believe I could have made P1. Nevertheless, I am really happy with today. I like working with the Fat Burner Racing Engineering team and I like the car.

Alfonso de Orleáns-Borbón, Team Principal: Red flag, red flag, red flag… Today was a bit extreme in that aspect, but I am really happy with the work done by the boys. These last three days we had six drivers in our cars who all did a really fantastic job. I am quite satisfied by everything.

Circuit: Jerez, Cádiz (4.427 kms)
Driver: Kamui Kobayashi Sten Pentus
Afternoon Time: 1’26″105 (P1) 1’27″405 (P12)

Fat Burner Racing Engineering enjoyed another productive day of work at the Circuito de Jerez, where, in the afternoon session, the Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi, at the wheel of one of the Spanish team’s cars, finished at the top of the time sheets. Estonian Sten Pentus finished the afternoon session in 12th position.

During the second GP2 test day at the Spanish track, the Fat Burner Racing Engineering Team continued working on its preparations towards the 2010 season with reigning GP2 Asian champion Kamui Kobayashi and World Series driver Sten Pentus. Both drivers worked on the team’s program without encountering any problems. Kobayashi showed his experience in the category setting very competitive times since the very first moments to finish the morning session in third although he was stopped on his fast lap by a red flag. Pentus, on the other hand, used the morning hours to adapt to the GP2 car, which he had not driven since last year’s test at Paul Ricard, and set the 21st fastest time.

With the temperatures rising at the Circuito de Jerez towards the afternoon, the session brought very good results for both drivers in Fat Burner Racing Engineering’s cars. Completing short stints, Kamui was able to keep a constant pace to be within the top positions. When the session was red flagged 26 minutes to the end, many drivers opted to stay in the pits and conclude their test day, but the Toyota test driver decided to have another go which ended in him setting the best time of the afternoon. ‘Team mate’ Pentus also improved his morning results considerably, and on his last flying lap he managed to set the 12th best time.

Kamui Kobayashi: It has been a very good day. Obviously everything was new and different for me as I have never before tested or driven for Fat Burner Racing Engineering. The team has a different work style from what I am used to in GP2, but everything went ok and I adapted without problems. The car has behaved very well and at the end I managed to set a good lap time which placed me in P1. It is true that it is not easy to set good times as there are many rookies, but it has been a very nice day.

Sten Pentus: Very good day. It has been a very good experience. Last year I had the chance to test with Fat Burner Racing Engineering in Paul Ricard, but then the weather was not very good, so I did not get a good feeling for the car. This time it has been different. Today has been fantastic. Obviously there are a few differences between World Series by Renault and GP2, but the main one is the tyre. In WSR we are using Michelin tyres, which last longer. In GP2 with the Bridgestone tyres, plus the heat, you can complete one warm up lap and then you have to go for the time on the first flying lap, although you already have less grip. I struggled a bit with the car’s balance and on my last run with new tyres, I thought I would not be well balanced. But as the team is so experienced, they knew everything would work out well. I did not expect to have such a good grip and I have to admit I was quite surprised with my fast lap! I wish I could do more test days, but am happy that everything worked well. The engineers and mechanics have been very nice and great to work with. I am happy with the overall results as I finished in front of many drivers who have much more experience in GP2 Series than I do.

Alfonso de Orleáns-Borbón, Team President: I am very happy with today’s results. Kamui has been exceptional. He has done a great job and at the end he finished in P1. Sten has consistently improved during the day as his times prove. Once again, the whole team has done a fantastic job.
